Lady Gaga Announces Mayhem, Her Long-Awaited Return to Pop

After months of cryptic teasers, Lady Gaga has officially announced her seventh studio album, Mayhem. The 14-track record, set for release on March 7 via Interscope, marks a return to the unapologetic pop sound that first catapulted her to fame. Fans won’t have to wait long for a taste of what’s to come—a new single and its accompanying music video will debut during a commercial break at the 2025 Grammy Awards on February 2.

Describing the creative process behind Mayhem in a press release, Gaga said the album emerged from a personal reckoning with her artistic identity. “It started as me facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved,” she explained. “It was like reassembling a shattered mirror: Even if you can’t put the pieces back together perfectly, you can create something beautiful and whole in its own new way.”

Gaga served as the album’s executive producer alongside Michael Polansky and Andrew Watt, with production credits also going to Watt, Cirkut, and Gesaffelstein. The album will feature 2024’s viral hit “Disease” and her chart-topping Bruno Mars collaboration, “Die With a Smile.” These tracks will bookend the otherwise still-secret tracklist.

Hints about the Chromatica follow-up, which Gaga cheekily referred to as Harlequin (or “LG6.5”) during press rounds for Joker: Folie à Deux, began to surface last September. At the time, she teased that a new album was on the way and tentatively set for February 2025. A countdown clock on her website further stoked anticipation, culminating in today’s official announcement.

Gaga has kept busy in the lead-up to Mayhem. Beyond her Oscar-buzzed performance in Folie à Deux, she performed at a Kamala Harris rally and will headline this year’s Coachella. Speaking to Vogue about the album’s deeply personal themes, Gaga revealed, “There’s a lot of pain associated with this adventure… When I’m in the studio, I’m able to face my demons, and what’s remarkable is—that’s the music. I’m able to hear it back.”
