Deafheaven Announce New Album, Share Lead Single “Magnolia”

Deafheaven have announced their sixth studio album, Lonely People with Power, set for release on March 28 via Roadrunner Records. The album sees the California-based band once again collaborating with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen, who also helmed their 2021 release, Infinite Granite.

The first single, “Magnolia,” dropped today, accompanied by a striking music video directed by Chelsea Jade and Sean Stout. The track is a dense, layered composition, blending the band’s signature metal intensity with the melodic experimentation they embraced on their previous effort. Early listens suggest that Lonely People with Power may bridge the gap between the atmospheric shoegaze of Infinite Granite and the visceral black metal that characterized their earlier work, such as 2013’s Sunbather.

The new album also features collaborations with Interpol’s Paul Banks and Boy Harsher’s Jae Matthews, a move that further underscores Deafheaven’s penchant for breaking genre boundaries. This will be the band’s first release under the Roadrunner Records banner, following stints with Deathwish, Anti-, and Sargent House.

Vocalist George Clarke, guitarists Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra, bassist Christopher Johnson, and drummer Daniel Tracy remain the core lineup for the project. Clarke recently described Lonely People with Power as the band’s “most dynamic record to date,” hinting at a sonic landscape that oscillates between the melodic and the abrasive.Lonely People With Power:

The video for “Magnolia” is a visual companion to the track’s relentless energy, featuring abstract imagery that amplifies its themes of transformation and decay. Deafheaven’s ability to merge visceral music with evocative visuals remains a cornerstone of their artistry.
