Plutocracy Planet is making waves in the music scene with their upcoming debut LP, a collaborative effort featuring an impressive lineup of artists spanning various genres. Led by former Alarm Magazine editor and musical aficionado Scott Morrow, the project serves as a response to the tumultuous events of recent years, tackling themes of greed, inequality, and the pervasive influence of money in politics.
This ambitious super-collective boasts a roster that reads like a who’s who of alternative music, with members hailing from bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, American Football, Protest the Hero, and The Get-Up Kids, among others. Their inaugural full-length album promises to be a sonic journey, blending post-hardcore elements with electronic experimentation and a diverse range of instrumentation.
The debut single, “This Very Severity,” sets the tone for what’s to come, featuring the legendary Bob Nanna on vocals. Known for his work with Braid and Hey Mercedes, Nanna brings a sense of urgency to the track as he navigates themes of societal decay and existential dread. His performance is complemented by the virtuosic guitar work of Jason Schimmel and the dynamic bass lines of Jonathan Hischke, creating a soundscape that is equal parts haunting and hypnotic.
Nanna expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the project, noting that the collaboration allowed him to explore new musical territory while addressing important social issues. “Being able to collaborate on cool, important projects is something that brings me great joy,” he remarked. “Please disregard my lack of dress pants in the video,” he added with a chuckle, referencing the song’s accompanying music video.
For Morrow, Nanna’s contribution to “This Very Severity” encapsulates the essence of Plutocracy Planet’s mission. “Bob is fantastic with wordplay, and his subject matter for the song felt like the perfect ‘proof of concept’ for the first single,” he explained. “I love that he emphasized the recurrent nature of conmen and political bullshit.”
Through their innovative blend of musical styles and thought-provoking lyricism, they aim to spark conversations and challenge the status quo. As Morrow succinctly puts it, “Music has always been a powerful tool for social change, and we hope that our music can inspire listeners to question the world around them and imagine a better future.”
