Toronto’s own Witch Prophet, known for her innovative sound blending soul, hip-hop, and electronic elements, recently released her latest project, ‘Gateway Experience [CLUB MIX].’
Crafted in collaboration with her wife, DJ, and business partner, SUN SUN, ‘Gateway Experience [CLUB MIX]’ is a five-track remix EP based on Witch Prophet’s critically acclaimed 2023 Polaris Music Prize long-listed album, ‘Gateway Experience’. The EP features a stellar lineup of collaborators, including Toronto’s own underground rap luminary DillanPonders, as well as JUNO award nominees Begonia and SATE. Together, they weave a tapestry of vocal layers, loops, and raps over a backdrop of soulful house, dance, and jungle-inspired beats.
Reflecting on their creative process, SUN SUN shares, “Growing up in the 90’s I was deep into the Toronto jungle scene. Sneaking out to go to Delirium rave nights, listening to ‘The Prophecy’ on CIUT and dubbing tapes of my favourite DJs and producers like; DJ Medicine Muffin, Mystical Influence, DJ Chocolate, DJ Freaky Flow etc. My memories of Toronto in ‘95-’98 is a major influence over my music tastes and production style. It’s where I pulled inspiration from while producing this club mix EP for Witch Prophet.”
