Prime Video has unveiled the official trailer and key art for its upcoming docuseries The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal, set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) before a wider release on the streaming platform. Directed by Mike Downie, brother of the late Gord Downie, the four-part series offers an in-depth look at the legendary Canadian rock band’s 40-year career.
The series, which has been described as a “labour of love” by Mike Downie, promises a candid portrayal of the band, from their early days in Kingston, Ontario, to their status as national icons. Featuring personal and archival footage, No Dress Rehearsal delves into the dynamics that have shaped The Tragically Hip, including the bonds that held the band together and the challenges that nearly tore them apart.
“This project is a labour of love, with personal and unseen footage from the band’s 40-year history,” Downie said in a statement. “We set out to understand what held the band together, what pushed them apart, and how they captured the hearts and minds of so many fans both in Canada and around the world.”

The Tragically Hip, known for their poetic lyricism and anthemic rock sound, have long been considered one of Canada’s most influential bands. Over the course of their career, the band released 14 studio albums, nine of which reached number one in Canada, and garnered 17 Juno Awards. They were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and were honoured with a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame.
Their 2016 cross-country tour, undertaken after Gord Downie’s terminal cancer diagnosis, became a significant cultural moment, drawing millions of Canadians together to celebrate the band’s legacy.
