Montreal’s Loryn Taggart unveils new single ‘Walls’

Loryn Taggart: A Quiet Force in Canadian Music

Montreal-based singer-songwriter and producer Loryn Taggart is steadily carving out a unique space in the Canadian music landscape. Originally from Hungary and raised on the Prairies, Taggart left her family home at 16 to chase a career in music in Toronto—a bold move for any teenager, let alone one venturing into the notoriously challenging music industry.

Taggart’s journey has been a gradual yet steady rise. She first gained attention while touring with Canadian folk musician Donovan Woods, but her breakout moment came in 2021 when she was cast as David Bowie in an international tribute tour. The tour, focused on Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy era, saw her perform at prestigious venues like Place des Arts, the Canadian Arts Centre, and the Amphitheatre Cogeco. The role was made possible by her partnership with La Tribe Agence and Moment Factory, both of which played a significant part in bringing this project to life.

Her latest single, “Walls,” reflects her genre-bending style, combining elements of pop and jazz. The song, inspired by the complexities of cohabiting with a boyfriend in a space once shared with his previous partner, was written during a Zoom session with Toronto-based songwriters Bryn and Aryss. The production process was notably DIY, with Taggart laying down a piano riff and harmonies using Logic in her living room before sending the tracks over to producer Howie Beck via Dropbox. Beck added his production touches, and Taggart completed the song by layering vocals and harmonies. The final touches included trumpet arrangements, contributing to the track’s layered sound.

Though she’s not one to seek the spotlight, Taggart’s work is slowly but surely making its mark. Her music’s introspective nature and her ability to blend genres are beginning to resonate with a wider audience, making her a name to watch in the Canadian music scene.
