Three Days Grace + The Warning + The Standstills @ Place Bell

Sunday night, Canadian rock royalty Three Days Grace were welcomed at Place Bell in Laval for the Explosions Tour to promote their new album released earlier this year in May.  As I made my way to the venue, there was an excitement in the air that I had not experienced in a while before a rock show. I was shocked to see how many people were already in their seats; it was understandable with two outstanding openers.

We were first introduced to The Standstills, a duo from Oshawa, Ontario featuring Jonny Fox on guitar and Renée Couture on the drums.  They were outstanding and played a solid set to get the blood rushing for the rest of the night! Their drummer Renée is a beast; I noticed they added a bassist, Brendan Mcmillan, that brings a whole new dimension to this band. You must check them out.

We were then treated to the wonderful trio of sisters from Mexico, The Warning.  What a powerhouse rock band.  Having seen them this summer at Foufounes Electriques, I knew what was coming; the crowd ate up their energy and had a great time.  Their set was full of bangers like Choke, Money and Disciple.  They even played their cover of Metallica’s Enter Sandman. Daniela, Paulina and Alejandra are so damn good; they are definitely a band to keep your eyes on.

Finally, it was time for the headliners from Norwood, Ontario to hit the stage.  Three Days Grace took little time to get the crowd on their feet and singing along with their massive hits.  They opened the show with their 16th number one on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart So Called Life.  Fun fact: they now have 17; I believe that’s the most for any rock band. The place was roaring when they played Home, The Mountain and Painkiller, all great rock songs.  Afterwards, they took it down a notch, playing a mini acoustic set with The High Road and Why So Cold.  Matt Walst’s voice was on point and well-lubricated; let’s just say he was having a great time; whatever he was drinking in his SOLO cup was working. This was on full display when the band played their new song, Lifetime; that song just hit so well live with everyone singing along was by far my favourite moment of the show.

They ended the show with three bangers: I Hate Everything About You, Never Too Late and Riot!  Singalongs, moshing, cell phone lights, smiles, tears and beers.  This is what a rock show should be, and congrats to Three Days Grace on being great ambassadors to the world for Canadian Rock till next time.
