Soccer Mommy + Zoon @ Corona Theatre – 30 March 2022

Soccer Mommy Montreal

The Corona Theatre tonight was a sea of love towards Sophia Regina Allison, aka Soccer Mommy.

COVID-19 was responsible for taking out Peel Dream Magazine.  They were replaced by Zoon from Hamilton Ontario, a band that is just one letter away from the hottest app that came out of the pandemic.

Zoon

Zoon were shortlisted for the 2021 Polaris Music Prize, and have created a sound they describe as “moccasin-gaze”, blending shoegaze with First Nations music.

The audience was very receptive to the soundscape that was created before us.

Daniel Monkman embodied Evan Dando mixed with Kurt Cobain which gave the sonancy a level of mystique.

Part tribal, part psychedelic and a whole lot of shoegaze transfixed the crowd, who swayed and let the music penetrate them.

The light show just added to the whole vibe, which made a very satisfying first act.

bloodstream, Circle the Drain & Royal Screw Up started the show, the first 3 tracks off Color Theory combined, reached close to 35 million plays.

With the postponements and venue changes, it just made the crowd that much more eager to yell: “We love you!”

Sophia kept a poker face through the adoration, but then at one point, the big smile came out and the crowd went nuts.

The night took an upbeat turn with crawling in my skin and it was almost impossible not to move along with the music.

Much love was given for the latest single Shotgun, which just keeps growing on me like my appreciation for a good IPA.  In this case, the hops are on the dancefloor.

For Still Clean, it was Sophia alone with her guitar as if we were all in her living room for a private performance of the song.

The encore consisted of Your Dog Scorpio Rising.

There is no question that Soccer Mommy connects with people.  Maybe it’s the self-deprecating lyrics, or the reflections of screwing up that make us relate to her.

Either way, like the Omicron BA.2, her music just gets more and more viral, without the side effects of a runny nose, or worse.

Tonight was a celebration of the old songs and the new with a crowd that soaked up every second.

I was disappointed that the Clean vinyl was sold out by the end of the night.  Lesson learned, buy early.  Hopefully, the sales will afford Sophia a guitar tech to remove the constant tuning between songs.
