Poppy + Mz Neon @ Corona Theatre – 29 March 2022

  • We realize the photo above is not to our usual standard. This is due to Poppy’s management imposing ridiculous control over what publications are allowed to use. They wouldn’t allow any of our photographer’s work to be used in this review, therefore we have to use photos from the show that are freely available on Instagram. Our usual high standards will resume for our other reviews. Thanks @audrey.ladybug *

On a cold and dreary Tuesday evening, internet sensation Poppy was stopping at the Corona Theatre for the “Never Find My Place” Tour. A small but very supportive group of fans was out to show her some love.

Opening up the show was the genre-bending singer Mz Neon. As soon as she hit the stage, we knew we would be in for quite a performance. She opened with her track “Cop Fucker” which combines modern grimy hip-hop over a punk attitude. In quick succession, she played her other new tracks “Pussy Stick” & “Alpha Bitch” that have been captivating the internet. As the show was progressing, the crowd which may have been unfamiliar with her work was starting to enjoy it more. The charismatic and very sexual Mz Neon had all eyes in the crowd on her as she rapped and sang. Some songs like the hook-laden “Be My Bitch” had a heavier edge as her guitarist was laying down solid riffs over her soulful singing. She closed her set with the memorable pop song “Let’s Fuck ‘Til the End of Time” which ended up being quite an earworm for the days to come. Like many in attendance, I did not know much about Mz Neon prior to her performance but I enjoyed it greatly. The lighting, the costumes and the music were hypnotically mixed together to create a great performance.

After a short break, Youtube and internet sensation Poppy and her band were ready to start. Poppy’s early career was a mix of strange and weird videos combined with a very pop persona. Tonight, she was out in support of her newer heavier material.

Once the intro was over, we were greeted with “Lessen The Damage” off her latest of her 2021 “Flux” album. Poppy was in a great mood as she sang and skipped around the stage while her band were laying down a solid beat over her sweet vocals. I did not expect her to pull off her screams so well live, but I was left surprised and quite impressed at her vocal performance.

Poppy and her fantastic band played songs off their latest albums. I was left surprised as the guitarist was laying down some fantastically heavy riffs. At one point, he even pulled out an 8-string guitar to show off what he was able to do.

Poppy was quite the charismatic performer with an adorable personality. She was interacting with her fans and joking around with them between her songs. She smiled and danced through her performance to the cheers of her gathered fans.

They played a solid performance alternating between some heavier tracks and some softer songs. Some of my personal favourites were “BLOODMONEY”, “All the Things She Said”, “Hysteria” and “Never Find My Place”.

  • Again, not the best photo due to the reasons mentioned above but thankfully @okarynna was there with her phone. We have some great photos from this concert, but we are not allowed to show them. Sorry *
