Mayhem to mark 40 Years with Olympia show

Legendary Norwegian black metal band Mayhem is gearing up to celebrate four decades of existence with a special anniversary tour across North America. The band, which has long held a reputation as one of the most influential and controversial forces in black metal, will perform in just six cities this November, including Montreal’s Olympia Theatre on November 12.

The brief but significant tour will also hit Toronto, Queens, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Denver, giving fans in select cities a chance to witness a retrospective set spanning Mayhem’s entire career. Starting with tracks from their pioneering 1987 EP Deathcrush and moving through to more recent material from their 2019 album Daemon, this performance promises to showcase the band’s musical evolution over the past 40 years.

Bassist and founding member Necrobutcher reflected on the band’s longevity: “I knew from day one back in 1984 that this band was going to be outstanding—one of the best bands ever! I guess that’s a big reason why we’re still here after 39 years—and counting.”

Mayhem, which currently consists of Necrobutcher, drummer Hellhammer, vocalist Attila Csihar, and guitarists Teloch and Ghul, has a notorious history, punctuated by tragedy and triumph. The band is still known for their early ‘90s association with the darker aspects of the black metal scene, but in recent years, they’ve focused on refining their sound and delivering technically impressive live performances. Their latest live album, Daemonic Rites, captures this energy, featuring songs like “Falsified and Hated” and the classic “Freezing Moon.”

As for what fans can expect, Hellhammer shared, “We play the songs that feel the best live. We’ve tried out different songs from past eras, but for a live audience, the songs have to have that ‘it’ factor.”

Tickets go on sale August 30 at 10 AM local time via Extensive Enterprise.
