Maya Malkin Returns to Montreal Following Release of Sophomore Albumâ–ª

Last month Montreal-born, Toronto-based indie-pop artist Maya Malkin released her solo career with the release of her second album, it’s a me thing 🙂. Known for her work with the Montreal band Motel Raphaël, Malkin’s transition to solo artistry has been defined by introspection and reinvention, themes that resonate throughout her latest record.

The album’s final single, “Welcome To My Funeral,” dropped alongside the full release and is already drawing attention for its mix of candid lyricism and polished pop production. Co-written and produced with Decz, whose previous work includes Curtis Waters’ viral hit “Stunnin’,” the track represents a pivotal moment for Malkin. In her words, “I see this song as the rebirth of myself. My first record was all about a breakup, and I really wanted this second album to be about me, hence the title.”

it’s a me thing 🙂 moves away from the heartbreak-centred narrative of her 2023 debut, Congratulations. Instead, it explores themes of self-discovery and individuality. Malkin, reflecting on the album’s creative process, shared: “I set out on a mission to write songs that weren’t about romantic relationships. I wanted to figure out what makes me me. This album is the result of that journey.”

The project began during a SOCAN songwriting session that inspired Malkin’s shift from Montreal to Toronto—a move she credits with broadening her artistic perspective. Yet, she hasn’t forgotten her roots. Malkin is set to play a homecoming show at Le Ministère in Montreal on November 29, offering fans a chance to hear the new material live.

Since launching her solo career in 2020 with the single “Hostage,” Malkin has garnered attention across platforms like CBC and Virgin Radio, performed at SXSW, and received accolades through programs like RBC x Canada’s Walk of Fame Emerging Musicians. With it’s a me thing 🙂, she continues to carve out a distinct voice in the indie-pop world—one that’s deeply personal yet universally relatable.

Tickets for her Montreal show are on sale now, promising an intimate evening with an artist who’s redefining herself on her own terms.
