Montreal’s Tumbleweed Dealer, the instrumental project spearheaded by Sebastien Painchaud, is making its return after an eight-year silence. The band’s fourth studio album, Dark Green, is slated for release on February 7, 2025, promising to deliver a bold evolution of their signature blend of bluesy desert rock and progressive experimentation.
Painchaud, reflecting on the band’s journey, explained, “Our first two albums created the colour palette with which we paint. The third album showed that these colours can paint very different pictures. We didn’t need to be a stoner/psychedelic rock to still sound like us. On this latest album, we took all these different directions and pushed our music even further. We streamlined it into a unique experience that still maintained the original spirit of the band’s sound.”
Tumbleweed Dealer’s previous releases have established them as a distinct voice in instrumental rock, known for weaving intricate compositions that draw on stoner rock, post-rock, and elements of math rock. Their 2016 album, TDIII, was noted for departing from the stoner genre’s conventions, focusing instead on crafting deeply textured soundscapes. Dark Green appears poised to expand on this trajectory, promising a cohesive yet exploratory musical narrative.
The album artwork, unveiled this week, hints at the thematic focus of Dark Green, with its interplay of natural imagery and abstraction. Painchaud described the visual aspect as integral to setting the mood for the record’s exploration of “the blurring lines between reality and imagination.”
A short teaser released alongside the announcement offers fans a brief taste of the album’s direction. The clip highlights lush, layered instrumentation, blending blues, jazz, and rock influences into what the band hopes will be a singular listening experience.
The album will be available digitally and in physical formats on its release date, marking a much-anticipated return for a project that has spent nearly a decade redefining its sound.
