David Gilmour, the iconic guitarist and vocalist known for his work with Pink Floyd and as a solo artist, is gearing up to release his first album of new material in nearly a decade. Titled ‘Luck and Strange,’ the album is set to drop on September 6th via Sony Music. This announcement comes alongside the unveiling of the album’s lead single, ‘The Piper’s Call.’

Recorded over a five-month span in Brighton and London, ‘Luck and Strange’ marks a significant creative endeavour for Gilmour. The album, which David himself and Charlie Andrew—known for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman—produced—displays a new dynamic in Gilmour’s artistic approach.

Reflecting on the collaboration with Andrew, Gilmour notes, “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, ‘Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?’ and ‘Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?’.” This candid exchange underscores Andrew’s unique perspective, which Gilmour values for its departure from conventional reverence.

Lyrically, ‘Luck and Strange’ delves into themes of aging and mortality, offering a contemplative exploration of life’s transient nature. Polly Samson, Gilmour’s longstanding collaborator, pens the majority of the album’s lyrics. Samson explains, “It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” This introspective lens, coupled with Samson’s evocative lyricism, promises a poignant listening experience.

In addition to original compositions, the album includes a poignant reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ Between Two Points. Renowned artist Anton Corbijn contributes artwork and photography for the album, further enhancing its visual and thematic depth.

Musically, ‘Luck and Strange’ boasts a stellar lineup of collaborators, including Guy Pratt, Tom Herbert, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd, Steve DiStanislao, Rob Gentry, Roger Eno, and Will Gardner. Notably, the title track features a posthumous contribution from Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, recorded during a spontaneous jam session in 2007.

Furthermore, the album features contributions from Gilmour’s own family, with Romany Gilmour and Gabriel Gilmour lending their talents to various tracks. Romany’s ethereal vocals and harp-playing are particularly showcased on ‘Between Two Points,’ adding a familial intimacy to the album’s sonic tapestry.

Luck and Strange’ will be released on September 6th on Sony Music.
