Montreal’s progressive metal community has reason to celebrate as the city’s Club Soda prepares to host the second edition of Progstorm Festival, with New York mathcore pioneers Car Bomb announced as Saturday night headliners for the August 21-23 event. The festival, which debuted in 2025 as Canada’s first event dedicated entirely to progressive metal, continues building its reputation as a destination for the genre’s most adventurous acts.
The lineup announcement carries particular weight for Car Bomb, marking their return to Montreal after more than 15 years. Their last appearance in the city came during a tour supporting Gojira, and that connection has taken on renewed relevance in recent weeks. Guitarist Greg Kubacki has been filling in for Gojira’s Joe Duplantier on the French band’s current European tour following Duplantier’s injury, a development that’s drawn considerable attention within metal circles. The timing adds an intriguing layer to Car Bomb’s Progstorm booking, potentially capitalizing on their elevated profile.

Joining Car Bomb on the bill are An Abstract Illusion, Exist, Fractal Sun, and Sky Passage. An Abstract Illusion’s inclusion is particularly notable as it represents the group’s first North American appearance, suggesting Progstorm’s organizers are positioning the festival as more than just a local showcase. The varied lineup, spanning atmospheric prog-death to technical and cinematic approaches, reflects the festival’s mandate to present the full spectrum of progressive metal’s current landscape.
Progstorm’s inaugural edition drew praise for its organization and cultivated sense of community, hosting 13 bands across three days. The 2026 edition appears positioned to expand on that foundation while maintaining Club Soda as its home base. The venue’s 600-capacity room offers an intimate setting that suits progressive metal’s often intricate arrangements, though it remains to be seen how many additional acts will round out the lineup as announcements continue through the spring.
