Dead Man’s Bones Share First Song Since 2009▪

Dead Man’s Bones, the duo of Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields, have released Lost in the Night, their first new music since their self-titled debut album in 2009. The single is out now on ANTI- Records, the label that released that first record.

The pair made the song with Tim Anderson, a longtime collaborator who produced it. It did not come together in a studio. After trying several Los Angeles studios without finding the sound they wanted, Gosling and Shields took two guitars, two drum machines and two synthesizers to a farm outside the city and recorded the track in a single day.

A music video starring Noah Jupe and Rain Spencer accompanies the release. It follows the two actors as they leave a cemetery behind and head into the lamplit streets of a city, a story that starts among the dead and turns into a night-time romance among the living.

That premise sits close to where the band started. The 2009 album was recorded with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir and drew on old horror films, forgotten Halloween records and American ghost stories. It placed at No. 43 on MOJO’s Top 50 Albums of 2009 and was included on AllMusic’s list of favourite rock albums that year. Pitchfork and The FADER both covered it at the time. In the 17 years since, songs from the record have been used in film and television, and it has kept finding listeners online well after its original run.

It remains the only album the duo has released. Lost in the Night arrives four days before Halloween.

Shields has been busy outside the band. He is credited as writer and producer on Gladys, an upcoming prequel to Weapons, and on the Godzilla films King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong, and he wrote and directed the play Dad’s Leg.

No album, tour or further releases have been announced alongside the single, so there are no Montreal dates to report.
