La Sécurité’s Bingo! Is Out June 12

La Sécurité have been one of Montreal’s more interesting bands for the past few years, and Bingo! — their sophomore album, out June 12 on Bella Union and Mothland — looks set to extend that reach internationally.

The five-piece (Éliane Viens, Félix Bélisle, Kenny Smith, Laurence Anne Charest-Gagné, and Melissa Di Menna) makes bilingual art rock with no wave and noise rock in the foundation, shoegaze shimmer in the texture, and enough of a pop instinct to hold it together. Bingo! pushes further into each of those directions, and it works.

The title track is the clearest entry point: disco-punk driven by frantic drums, crunchy bass, and fuzzed-out guitars over new wave synthesizers. Catchy and strange in roughly equal measure. The album’s 10-track tracklist (Snack City, Deny, Detour, Power Snoozer, Princesse, Bingo, Chill Pill, Trixie, Nah Nah, Ketchup) sounds about as odd as it reads.

La Sécurité play POP Montreal on September 25.

Pre-order Bingo! via Bella Union or Bandcamp.
