Quebec’s death metal outfit Backstabber are revving up for a summer of live shows across their home province. Fresh off the release of their latest EP, “Patterns of Domination,” the band will be hitting the road in May with a highlight performance at Festival des Guitares du Monde alongside Blinded By Faith and Blackguard.
They stop in Montreal to play at Pirahna Bar on July 12.

Backstabber started in 2012 as a solo project by Christian Thériault, fueled by a passion for aggressive metal. Over the years, it morphed into a full-fledged band, with Thériault (guitars, vocals) joined by Philippe B. St-Jacques (guitars), Eric Séguin (bass, backing vocals), and Keven L.-Hull (drums).
Their new EP, inspired by James Redfield’s “The Celestine Prophecy,” explores themes of manipulation and control. “Each track tackles a specific pattern,” says Thériault, “which is reflected musically. The songs are distinct, but the production ties them together into a cohesive whole.”
“Patterns of Domination” marks a turning point for Backstabber. Thériault emphasizes the band’s evolution, with a stronger focus on collaborative songwriting. This is evident in the EP’s diversity, ranging from old-school death metal riffs to brutal breakdowns. Fans of Kataklysm, Lamb of God, and Mors Principium Est will find plenty to gnash their teeth to.

Backstabber’s summer tour kicks off on May 10th in Quebec City and wraps up on July 13th in Gatineau. For fans of Canadian extreme metal, Backstabber is definitely a band to watch.
