The Problem With Linkin Park’s New Vocalist

Linkin Park‘s new vocalist, Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara, has sparked controversy following allegations related to her ties to the Church of Scientology and support of convicted rapist Danny Masterson. The news comes after Armstrong joined the band, replacing Chester Bennington, who passed away in 2017.

The allegations gained traction following a resurfaced comment from Cedric Bixler-Zavala, lead singer of The Mars Volta, who publicly criticized Armstrong on social media. Bixler-Zavala’s wife, Chrissie Carnell-Bixler, was one of several women who accused Masterson of sexual assault, though the charges tied to her case did not lead to a conviction.

In a since-deleted Instagram comment, Bixler-Zavala accused Armstrong of supporting Masterson during his preliminary hearing, writing: “I’m surprised none of you wrote a letter on Danny Masterson’s behalf since your corny ass singer showed up to support him in the prelims.” He also claimed that members of Armstrong’s group, alleged to be Scientologists, intimidated one of the accusers during the hearing.

Masterson, best known for his role in That ’70s Show, was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison in September 2023 after being convicted of raping two women. His connection to Scientology has been a point of contention throughout the trial, with the church accused of attempting to shield Masterson from legal consequences.

Armstrong has not publicly responded to the allegations, and as of now, she still follows Masterson on social media. Linkin Park, for their part, has remained silent on the matter, instead focusing on promoting their new album From Zero, set to release on November 15.

The controversy has overshadowed the band’s recent live-streamed performance, where Armstrong debuted as lead vocalist alongside drummer Colin Brittain. While Armstrong’s vocal performance was largely praised, with some critics noting her ability to honour Bennington’s legacy without imitation, the growing concerns over her alleged past have left fans divided.
