On Friday, Montreal Rocks were invited out to Piranha Bar by an opening act for a small, intimate, and, at times, rowdy crowd. The opening act that invited us out, called 91 Dominos, was a trio all clad in matching basketball-style jerseys with their nicknames taking the player name position. They played an energetic set. They donned some cat masks for their song “Radioactive Cat”, and they sounded like me entering the Tunnel Ville-Marie singing “Get outta my way” with their closing song called “Territorial Pissing”. Their self-described rage rock vibe felt subtle for some of the set but was very evident in their closer.
The supporting act of the night was another new one to me called Louder Temper. The stand-out song to me was their cover of the Motorhead classic that everyone blasted on Tony Hawk Pro Skater: “Ace of Spades.” I couldn’t find anything on Spotify, Bandcamp or even Soundcloud to re-listen to anything they had written after the performance, so might have to wait and see if they get in the studio to be able to expand their audience.
Brise-Fer is a French singing southern rock-sounding band that was the headliner for the night. They had the shortest set of the night, and I kind of feel bad for them that part of the crowd that I observed during Louder Temper had either left or spread out because the floor felt emptier during their performance. I liked the song “Maudite vie sale” as it had a lot of nods to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s sound built within the song.
These bands are far from household names, but they did get a crowd out and had them moving which I believe speaks some volumes to their start. Maybe I’ll see them in a more packed club one day in the future, but that hasn’t been written in stone yet.
