Montreal’s indie folk collective, The Franklin Electric, is back in the spotlight with their latest single, “Falling Behind,” the second release from their upcoming EP coming this July. Following February’s release of “Choices,” a song brimming with optimism, this latest offering delves into more introspective territory, reflecting frontman Jon Matte’s personal journey.
“Falling Behind” delves into the sentiment of feeling overwhelmed, exploring the yearning for familiarity and a sense of belonging. Matte, the driving force behind the group, shares his personal connection to the track, reminiscing about his upbringing in a small town and the longing for the comfort of home. “I remember this feeling when I was younger, growing up in a very small town, being surrounded by the same friends, family and that familiar feeling of home,” Matte reflects. “This song is about living your dreams and pursuing your career, but you end up getting bored of that feeling the older you get. It’s secretly wishing to leave everything behind and come home.”

Produced by Matte himself, “Falling Behind” showcases the band’s signature blend of strings, harmonies, and poignant lyrics. With lines like “You’re moving too fast for your body / Like a train as you trail behind / It’s plain and it’s simple you’re losing your touch / This time you’ve falling behind,” the song captures the essence of navigating life’s challenges and the struggle to keep pace.
The Franklin Electric, led by singer-songwriter and producer Jon Matte, has garnered acclaim for their indie folk sound and emotive storytelling. Nominated for a Juno for Group of the Year in 2019 and an Adisq Award in 2021, the band has solidified their place in the Canadian music scene. Their previous album, “Oh Brother,” offered a deeply personal narrative, shedding light on Matte’s own experiences with mental health and loss.
Following a series of reimagined piano versions of their earlier works, The Franklin Electric’s return with “Choices” signalled a new chapter for the band, setting the stage for their forthcoming EP. With “Falling Behind,” the group continues to captivate audiences with their evocative melodies and candid lyricism, reaffirming their status as one of Canada’s most compelling musical acts.
