Soccer Mommy + Tomberlin @ Beanfield Theatre

As I walked into Beanfield Theatre from the cold and dry Montreal air, I was greeted by the warmth of the stage lights and beautiful floral décor.

As the audience patiently waited for Soccer Mommy to grace the stage, we were welcomed by the soft and beautiful voice of Tomberlin. Between gloomy songs about dissociating and being sad, the Florida native joked about strongly disliking the cold and the snow, quite enjoying the warm personality that Montreal has. Her silly interactions with the crowd created a perfect relationship between the artist and the audience.

Tomberlin was joined by her close friend Alice, who played the violin during the opening set. It was a perfect mix of soft vocal melodies and powerful string tones. Her music resembled that of Searows or Alice Phoebe Lou, pensive and melancholic lyrics paired with soft vocals that feel like a warm blanket right out of the dryer.

Once the crowd had been mellowed out from the stresses of winter, we were quickly woken up by indie rock singer and headliner, Soccer Mommy. The audience was introduced with fun songs like “Abigail,” “Circle the Drain,” and “Driver” that forced them to dance along, and a light display that kept everyone mesmerized.

Though many of Soccer Mommy’s songs are high energy, a lot of the music on her newest album, Evergreen, released in October of 2024, is inspired by the loss of her mother. She spoke about how songwriting heavily aided the grieving process and allowed her to channel her grief and turn it into art.

The audience took in Soccer Mommy’s set with open ears and an open heart, many members of the audience sharing that emotion through tears. It was truly a beautiful, emotional (but well-balanced), and intimate show, despite the energy of Soccer Mommy’s music.
