It’s been two years in the making, but Diamond Star Halos, the 12th studio album from Def Leppard can easily be poised to be one of the best these five Rock’N’Roll Hall of Famers have released in the last few years. If there is ever any doubt that these veteran rockers are true to their craft, then take a step back and listen to this album again….and again. Featuring 15 new and original tracks, this album is a reflection of everything from Leppard’s signature sound to an infusion of the glam rock era influences of their favourites (T-Rex, Mott the Hoople, Bowie) A sort of tribute to their roots with a modern fresh twist.
The first track “Take What You Want” sets the tone of classic Leppard powered-charged big hits, catchy choruses and solid guitar riffs à la Collen & Campbell followed by “Kick” and “Fire it Up”.
The album, which got its name from a lyric found on a T-Rex song, flows from track to track almost as a testament of their ability to conduct their creativity with an approach that mirrors both the sign of the times and their traditional rock roots.
We can hear it in the perfect blend of two genres of music; country meets rock on the track “The Guitar” which features the stunning vocals of Alison Krauss. Krauss who has previously collaborated with Robert Plant also lends her voice to “Lifeless” and it is easy to hear how her voice highlights a beautiful contrasting blend between hers and Joe Elliott’s vocals.
“From Here to Eternity” is a 70’s sound with the unmistakable Leppard harmonies. The ballad “Goodbye for Good This Time” works its magic with the sublime sound of the guitars and the mesmerizing keys played by Bowie’s own Mike Garson. One of the best on the album without a doubt.
Diamond Star Halos is a complete package of everything Leppard and then some…. spot-on harmonies, anthem-style sing-along rock songs and those killer twin guitar riffs. Feel-good, let’s-rock music that clearly defines why these 5 rockers’ career has spanned over 40 years… and counting.
