Out of the three days, if I could choose only one, it would be Saturday. Two reasons: The National + Billie Eilish.
Matt Maltese (Coors Light Mountain Stage) starts off us nice and easy with some Indie Pop that looks promising.
Alicia Moffet made her mark on TV with The Next Star (2013) and La Voix (2015). Always great to have a Quebec representation on the big stage, and with a voice like that, it should be a great progression to the day at 2:40 PM (Bell River Stage).
The Cults have this retro sound that make them an interesting choice for the festival. While joining a cult is a dubious endeavour, seeing one live should be a treat! Catch them at 3:20 PM (Coors Light Mountain Stage).
If you are expecting a heavily sombre, black wearing, extreme makeup look for Goth Babe, you will be disappointed. This is no depressed Sisters of Mercy fan, but Indie Pop. As one commenter said on the YouTube page: “Dude couldn’t make a bad song even if he made it his mission in life to do so.” 4:05 PM Bell River Stage
Today’s Backyard Sessions by Sirius XM pick is Po Lazarus, a Montreal band that dance between the extremes of delicate sounds to deep and thunderous bursts of energy, that will captivate you! Get mesmerized at 5:15 PM.
When it comes to energy, SOFI TUKKER could power a Tesla across the country. Moving to the Coors Light Mountain Stage (6:30), they will have you dancing in no time.
O70 Shake seems like an interesting choice as well at the Chevrolet Valley Stage at 7:00 PM. In fact, that stage will have some Latin vibes during the day which many will enjoy.
The National is a band that grows on you quickly. At first, you might dismiss their soft sound as boring, but then they get their hooks into you and you are a fan.
One Reddit fan described them as Red Wine Indie Rock, and I have to say, can’t think of a better description. In fact, last time I saw them at MTelus, Matt gave a full bottle of wine with several cups to the person in from of me, who proceeded to bartend and offer this delightful bounty to some of us in the front of the stage. As we drank some of Matt’s wine, we let our palette get barraged by delightful flavours and sounds.
HINT: Stay front and centre and you might just get a sip of Matt’s wine!
If you want to experience more intensity, many will surely want to catch PUP (8:40 PM Chevrolet Valley Stage). While the crowd might be wild, and will sing at the top of the voices to the songs, PUP does care about their fans, being known for creating an inclusive and safe place for them.
Within one year, Billie Eilish performed at the Corona Theatre and Bell Centre, such was her meteoric rise.
Billie is punk, in the way that she does things her way, alongside her trusted brother Finneas O’Connell. There is a language used that seems to connect with her fans.
Catch her performance at 9:20PM on the Bell River Stage.
