UK born alternative-punk duo Nova Twins metaphorically tore the house down at Bar Le Ritz for their debut Montreal show this past week.
Mixing sounds of nu-metal, punk rock, and alternative melodies, Nova Twins have taken the world by storm since the release of their debut album “Who Are the Girls” at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.
Following the release of their latest album, “Supernova,” contagious riffs, electronic basslines, and powerhouse scream-punk vocals are only multiplied with Nova Twins. With continuous twists and turns around every corner, once again, they are proven to be the artist to keep on watching out for.

Lead singer and guitarist Amy Love, as well as bass guitarist and keyboardist Georgia South, comprise one of the most underrated artists I’ve ever come across in the punk scene. Before witnessing them live, I have to confess I haven’t been lucky enough to come across their music before. Looking back on my first moments of the night, I was not at all prepared for what lay ahead for me.
The band started the night by playing “Antagonist,” followed by “Cleopatra.” Both powerhouse punk songs filled with rage about taking back power that was already yours in the first place.
It didn’t take long for several mosh pits to be formed. It was heartwarming for me to be able to watch a female-dominated fanbase mosh and all have fun together, as well as feel safe doing it.

This was the kind of energy that I feel Nova Twins bring to every performance. They’ve successfully created a safe punk, BIPOC, female-dominated space to come together and enjoy great music, which is not an easy thing to accomplish.
I think my favourite song performed was definitely “Sleep Paralysis.” I noticed distinguishable sounds similar to Panic! At the Disco, Rico Nasty, and Fall Out Boy. I even felt some Beyoncé melodies at times due to vocalist Amy Love’s outstanding vocal range. Now that’s a musical combination I would never have pictured together before.

Being able to scream in such broad ranges as well as sing them in similar harmonies is not easy and a skill I’ve hardly ever seen myself, let alone in person with my own ears.
As we were now approaching the end of our night, the encore was near… Consisting of 3 electric in-your-face songs, “Undertaker,” “Fire and Ice,” and closing song, “Choose Your Fighter.” All three are girl power radiating and got the crowd begging for more…
There was no second encore, however, fans were left feeling more than satisfied. I couldn’t help but notice everyone around me was close to dripping in sweat, with complimenting smiles on faces no matter where I looked.

The happiness and gratitude I felt as I was leaving only grew and stuck with me long-term. I hope every show I attend throughout my life will make me feel similar emotions to what I felt tonight. Rock on!!
