Montreal-based singer-songwriter Vitalia is continuing to carve out her unique sound in the city’s vibrant music scene. Born in Ukraine, Vitalia’s musical journey began at the age of six, experimenting with genres ranging from disco to alt rock. Now, the artist is shifting her focus towards a grungier, rawer sound, which will be heard in her upcoming releases.
Her latest single, Maybe, blends disco elements with modern pop. The track tells the story of two people dancing together, with one realizing that their investment in the relationship hasn’t paid off—especially as the other remains hung up on an ex. “I’ve always loved disco, and Maybe is a modern disco dance song meant to make people forget their worries on the dancefloor,” she says.

Despite the upbeat nature of Maybe, Vitalia is clear about her shift towards something more vulnerable and gritty. “The sound I’m going for with my next singles is going to be more raw,” she explains. “I’ve always found that grungier songs are perfect for releasing anger or sadness. It’s comforting to know you’re not the only one going through hard times.”
Her upcoming single, what a shame, set for release on August 16, takes a step in that new direction. Described as an indie pop-rock anthem, the song explores the complexity of reconnecting with a past lover, only to realize the same problems remain. “It’s about choosing self-respect and distance over repeating old mistakes,” Vitalia says, reflecting on the emotional weight of the track.
Vitalia cites influences ranging from ABBA and Dua Lipa to Paramore and Måneskin, with her evolving sound reflecting a desire to explore the rougher edges of alternative rock. “I wanted Maybe to be that disco-pop vibe, but what a shame really taps into that alt-pop space where guitars take the lead. It’s the direction I’m heading in with future releases.”
