Montreal-based artist and trombonist Simbo, known offstage as Modibo Keita, is set to release a new EP titled SOUNDSORCERER VOL.2 on October 25, 2024. This latest project follows his debut album SOUNDSORCERER VOL.1, further solidifying his presence in the music world.
Simbo’s latest single, “OUTSIDE TONIGHT,” offers a preview of what fans can expect from the upcoming EP. The track showcases Simbo’s signature blend of jazz, R&B, and experimental hip-hop, underscored by a modern twist. With smooth vocals, infectious basslines, and shimmering synths, “OUTSIDE TONIGHT” captures the vibe of a summer night out, blending upbeat energy with a reflective message. According to Keita, the song is about choosing happiness despite tough times, with the upbeat production serving as a reminder to stay positive.
Accompanying the single’s release on September 6 will be a music video and a remix collection titled OUTSIDETONIGHT.ZIP. This remix tape will feature three new versions of the track, each with its own unique flair, including Afro, Amapiano, and Konpa edits. The remixes will feature collaborations with producers ROBY STUDIOS and MANNO BEATS.
Simbo’s musical journey has been marked by collaborations with an array of artists, from Grammy winner J. Hoard to Talib Kweli and the Orchestre National de Jazz de Montréal. His work not only spans genres but also demonstrates a deep commitment to his Malian heritage, with SOUNDSORCERER serving as a tribute to Sundiata Keita, the first emperor of the Mali Empire.
Beyond his work in the studio, Simbo has made significant contributions to the Montreal music scene. He is the founder of The Shed Montréal, a speakeasy event series known for its improvised hip-hop, R&B, and jazz performances. The Shed has also curated after-parties for the Montreal International Jazz Festival, where Keita recently became the first Black talent buyer since the festival’s inception.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Simbo is an advocate for progressive arts education, having led masterclasses at institutions such as the University of Toronto. His multifaceted career continues to bridge the gap between music, culture, and education, making him a key figure in the Canadian music landscape.
