Montreal-based musician Riiver Brukes is turning to her roots with her latest single, “Heartland,” a reflective track that pays homage to her Scottish origins, particularly her hometown of Edinburgh. The song captures the essence of a land she left behind but clearly holds close, blending a mix of melancholia and warmth that resonates with her listeners.

Brukes, who has built a reputation for her gritty, soulful voice and versatile songwriting, describes “Heartland” as a nostalgic piece inspired by her memories of Scotland. “The Heartland is a song about Scotland, perhaps more specifically, Edinburgh, my hometown,” Brukes explains. She recalls how the natural beauty of Canada, where she now resides, often reminds her of Scotland, sparking the creative process for this track.

The single intertwines Brukes’ longing for Scotland with the vibrant energy she channels into her music. “It’s at times quite melancholic, demonstrating that there are definitely things I miss about home,” Brukes notes. However, the track isn’t entirely sombre; its upbeat chorus and funky tempo shift the tone to one of fond remembrance rather than sorrowful longing. Through “Heartland,” she sketches a vivid picture of Scotland’s unique charm, from its historic landmarks like Edinburgh Castle to its cultural symbols like tartan and pipers.

Riiver Brukes is no stranger to the music scene, having been part of various bands, including the pop outfit Cicero, which achieved success in the European Dance Charts. Now embarking on her solo career, Brukes has been making her mark with her debut album, Reformed Soul. Co-written and produced by Joe Segreti, the album showcases her eclectic influences, particularly her passion for jazz and blues.
