On December 2nd, in one of Montreal’s most storied venues, a collective of the city’s most compelling musical voices will gather for a cause that has moved them to action.
Bibi Club, Bon Enfant, Choses Sauvages, Corridor, HAWA B, La Sécurité, Magi Merlin, Myriam Gendron, Nadah El Shazly, Emna Mâaref, Pomme, Safia Nolin, Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (of Jerusalem In My Heart), and Zaidybaby will perform at Club Soda as part of United for Palestine, a benefit concert for Palestinian children and refugees. The money raised goes to The Sameer Project and The Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund.
The show was the artists’ idea, a response to what they describe in a collective letter as “the constant stream of horrific images of the Palestinian genocide, the inaction of our governments, and the lack of coverage by the media at large.” Between sets, Palestinian voices and activists, including Nathalie Doummar and Elissa Kayal, will speak, turning the evening into something more than a typical benefit gig.
The lineup pulls from across Montreal’s indie landscape: the art-pop experimentalism of Bibi Club, the stark folk of Gendron, the electronic textures of Moumneh’s Jerusalem In My Heart project, the guitar-driven momentum of Corridor and Bon Enfant. The letter, signed by more than 50 members of Montreal’s cultural community, calls for an end to Israeli occupation and Canadian complicity, and pushes for accountability for what they term genocide. It also lays out direct actions anyone can take: write to elected officials, demonstrate, and educate others.
Montreal has always been a city where art and activism blur together, from the Quiet Revolution to the Maple Spring. This benefit continues that tradition, with the city’s musicians doing what they felt they needed to do.
