Montreal singer-songwriter Hanorah has announced the release of her forthcoming EP, Closer Than Hell, scheduled for May 9, 2025, under Ensoul Records. In conjunction with this announcement, she has unveiled a new single, “Barbed Wire,” which delves into the pain of a fractured friendship.
“Barbed Wire” represents a departure from Hanorah’s earlier R&B and soul influences, as showcased in her 2023 project, Time Waits For No Woman. The track blends shoegaze elements with dynamic rhythms, creating a complex soundscape accentuated by a bold horn section.
The upcoming EP, Closer Than Hell, comprises four tracks:
- 1. Matty
- 2. Barbed Wire
- 3. Heavenly One
- 4. untitled (i left my body to love you)

Hanorah’s artistic journey has seen her perform alongside acts such as The Brooks, Lee Fields, Coeur de Pirate, and Mavis Staples. Her debut EP, For the Good Guys and the Bad Guys, and subsequent album, Perennial, have led to performances at major festivals across North America, including the Montreal Jazz Fest, Toronto Jazz and Blues Fest, and South by Southwest.
In 2024, Hanorah expanded her artistic repertoire by securing the lead role in a horror film, which premiered at the Kingston Canadian Film Festival in March.
Closer Than Hell is described as a tender exploration of hope and love in unexpected places.
