Goldie Boutilier @ Studio TD

Making the trek to Place des Arts can be a bit of a long haul this time of year, but Goldie Boutilier‘s performance at Studio TD was a true blueprint for a stellar winter evening. Having missed her play at La Sala Rossa just 10 short months ago, bundling up and coughing up change for coat check was a small price to pay to see her in one of the city’s more intimate downtown venues (read: not MTELUS). Gaining recognition from solo performances and festival appearances, Goldie’s smooth vocals have reached an even broader (and largely virtual) audience as her track “The King of Possibilities” was adopted as the theme for the Netflix series The Hunting Wives. These are major moves, and I personally think it’s important to highlight that we are within the first six months of the release of her first full-length album Goldie Boutilier Presents… Goldie Montana. Not that you need to take my word for it; she’s been nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year as part of the 2026 Junos. Oh, and just as a cherry on top, she’s received a slew of nominations for the 2026 East Coast Music Awards.

This breakthrough didn’t happen overnight, though. She’s been putting out EPs annually for the last few years, and each collection gave us a glimpse into the world of Goldie. This consistency was just shy of being a tease since each EP only contained a handful of tracks (at her most generous, six at a time). Short and sweet, but they’re not to be underestimated; what she’s lacked in quantity over the years, she’s absolutely made up for with quality. Boutilier crafts each single with precision, intention, and unmistakable drama. She may hail from small town Cape Breton, NS, but her storytelling invites you into a world of glamour, fame, power, and tragedy. And seduction. Always seduction.

Not that we expected any less, but it was clear from the moment she took the stage that a story would be exactly what we were getting. Not just a chapter, but the whole story. The crowd quieted for her poetic introduction of The King of Possibilities Tour: Act I, which began with “At the End of the War”, the understated final track of her latest album. A delicate prelude to an evening of passion and emotion, where Goldie promised to “tell the truth… or something like that”. Fittingly, she followed up with a tune proclaiming, “I’m an angel, but I’m no saint”, before really turning up the power. Truly a provocateur, Goldie was a siren draped in silk, and it was impossible to resist the allure.

Effortlessly charismatic, all I could see was the confidence of a rockstar commanding the stage and embodying all it meant to be a performer. Rhinestone sunglasses, a glimmering fan, bold dance moves, nothing was too much. If anything, the energy of the audience made it evident we were hungry for even more. She delivered with “King of Possibilities”, “I Am the Rich Man”, and “The Actress”, each song establishing Goldie as the central character of her own story. However, the rise must always be accompanied by the fall; “Terrible Things” and “The Ways I Punish Myself” give us a glimpse into the sorrows of innocence stolen and the suffering that comes with survival. No one in the audience is a stranger to these emotions, but the way she wove them into the performance was masterful.

My expectations for her performance were high, but Goldie Boutilier really blew me away. Even as we heard the first few chords of “Cowboy Gangster Politician”, the single that put her on the map for so many of us and was surely the “last” song of the evening, we were in awe. It took me a second to place the feeling, since I can sometimes get jaded by the sheer number of artists coming through the city. The awe becomes increasingly rare while I comfortably say, “they’ll be back”. That evening, I would have been elated to stay late into the night listening to every song she’d ever written. It takes talent to turn that unrealistic desire into satisfaction with an encore, but “Goldie Montana” was the finale that we all craved. Leaving the venue, I was hopeful that her last words were less lyrics and more of a promise: “Watch out world, it’s Goldie Montana”. Oh, we’ll be watching and, even better, we’ll be ready.
