Avril Jensen @ Lion D’Or

It would be easy to mistaken early Avril Jensen, like COLORS for Billie Eilish.  At first listen, I knew there was something special about Avril, whom I often play for guest who always inadvertently ask:  “Who is this?”

Avril released her first LP, crowning the achievement with an album launch party, on November 11, 2024.

Lion D’Or is a perfect venue to experience Avril’s soft, yet moving voice. Like Billie, some songs are whispered into your ear while others are playful and catchy.

Avril was warmly welcomed to the stage, with an audience of family, friends and fans.

Backed by a talented band, for once missing father Tomas Jensen who normally plays guitar. She was even joined by Erwan for the title track.

The performance was captivating, especially when you could hear a pin drop during Avril’s soft numbers.

Avril is enchanted by the number 11, hence the track 11:11 on the album, but by unplanned coincidence, her show happened to be on November 11th, a cosmic thank-you for this party.

It was clear Montréal supports this La Voix contestant who made an impression on the show, and on the Lion D’Or crowd.

Avril’s album Is Any of This Real? delights and delivers an evolving sound, which was in full display on stage. Between the moody intro and outro, the album is filled beautiful songs about emotional uncertainty and introspection.

Anxiously to see what’s next by this emerging artist, who obviously feels at home on stage and behind a mic, while the vinyl will find a home frequently on my turntable.
