Super Plage has released Kauai Core, a new French-language electro-house track featuring Montreal artist SUUNCAAT, out today via Lisbon Lux Records. The single is the first taste of an upcoming album from the project helmed by Jules Henry, and arrives alongside a video directed by Rosalie Bordeleau.
The track takes its cues from the landscapes of Kauai, Hawaii, with a deep bass line and woozy funk-house feel that sits close to Kaytranada’s corner of the dancefloor. SUUNCAAT, a multi-instrumentalist and producer whose work moves between drum and bass, ambient, and outsider pop, brings a contrasting sensibility to Henry’s nu-disco instincts, her background in classical violin and underground electronics pulling against the track’s instinct to just make you move.
Watch the video below:
Henry formed Super Plage in late 2019 with an explicit focus on French-language music and on platforming the female artists in his orbit. That approach has been consistent across four studio albums, including 2023’s Magie à minuit, which earned an ADISQ nomination for Electronic Album of the Year, and last year’s Grosse Maison, which pushed further into house and French touch territory. The project has opened for Bon Entendeur and MYD, and has toured the UK through Wide Days.
SUUNCAAT’s own work is harder to pin down. She moves between instrumentation, ambient textures, and drum and bass, with songwriting and directing credits alongside her production work. Her frame of reference runs from dark fantasy to mythology to cinema, and she describes her approach as rooted in contrast, which makes her an interesting fit for Henry’s generally more euphoric instincts.
Super Plage has appearances at SXSW, Francofolies de La Rochelle, and FME on his touring résumé, along with consistent support from Radio-Canada and Sirius XM. A summer tour is underway, with a slot at Osheaga on July 31.
