Montreal Trio Hush Unveil Hypnotic Debut Single

The late October light in Montreal has a way of bending reality: soft, diffused, caught somewhere between seasons. It’s the perfect backdrop for Hush, a new trio whose debut single “The Mirrors Were Right” arrives like a transmission from that liminal space between waking and dreaming.

Released today via Simone Records, the track introduces a band already operating at full strength. Lead vocalist Paige Barlow, joined by multi-instrumentalists Miles Dupire-Gagnon and Gabriel Lambert, have crafted something that feels both nostalgic and prescient. Shimmering guitars wrap around warped analog drums and kosmische synths, all anchored by ethereal three-part harmonies. Co-produced and mixed by René Wilson, the song achieves a crystalline pop clarity while maintaining an alluring surrealist blur. “The sky is our mirror, made of sweet dreams… which myth are you living?” Barlow sings, her voice casting lines like spells in soft focus. Reflections on dissociation and occasional flashes of clarity inspired the lyrics: “the mirrors are right” when reflections feel distorted, and “luckily alive” when one is above water.

The accompanying video amplifies this fractured sense of self through cubist and surrealist imagery. “We wanted to portray the distorted inner witness,” the band explains. “Evolving identities over time… worlds sensed, not witnessed.” Drawing from touchstones as varied as Broadcast, The Velvet Underground, Cocteau Twins, and Ariel Pink, Hush have synthesized their influences into something distinctly their own: a sonic mirage that resists easy categorization.

“The Mirrors Were Right” arrives as a calling card ahead of their debut full-length, expected in 2026.
