Wacken Metal Battle Canada Opens 2026 Submissions

For Canadian metal bands, the road to Germany starts here. The 2026 edition of Wacken Metal Battle Canada is officially underway, opening submissions for unsigned bands hoping to represent the country at Wacken Open Air, one of the largest and most respected metal festivals in the world.

Applications are open until November 30, with regional battles planned across the country in cities including Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Quebec City, and Montreal, where the national final will take place. The winner will earn a slot on the Wacken stage next summer, performing for more than 85,000 metal fans from around the globe.

“This is your chance once again,” says organizer JJ Tartaglia, who’s been at the helm of WMBC for nearly a decade. “It’s the first step to a world of opportunity. We invite bands to play great shows, expand their audience, and have their shot at Wacken.” Interested acts can apply through the official site at metal-battle.com, selecting Canada as their country.

The grand prize includes a performance slot at Wacken Open Air 2026, full backline support, $1,000 CAD toward flights to Germany, and VIP camping access. The global festival returns from July 29 to August 1 for its 35th edition, with headliners including Def Leppard, Lamb of God, Emperor, and In Flames.

Last year’s national champions, Hamilton’s Killotine, took home the title after a fierce final at Vancouver’s Rickshaw Theatre. Their victory earned them a spot on Wacken’s international stage, following in the footsteps of past Canadian winners like Strigampire, Beguiler, and Montreal’s own Mutank, who claimed the title back in 2014.

Since its inception in 2013, Wacken Metal Battle Canada has become a rite of passage for heavy bands looking to break beyond the local circuit. For the underground scene, it’s not just a contest—it’s a rare chance to put Canadian metal on one of the biggest stages the genre has to offer.
