Kandle Shares Haunting, Trip Hop-flavored single, “Burn”

Kandle is gearing up to release Danger to Dream, her fifth studio album, on October 25. Known for her dark, moody soundscapes, the Montreal-based artist today dropped “Burn,” a trip-hop-inspired single that highlights her knack for blending melancholy with cinematic flair. With this latest release, she channels influences from Portishead and Massive Attack, adding a modern twist on a classic genre.

Originally from British Columbia, Kandle has been a fixture on the Canadian music scene since signing her first deal at just 19. Over the years, she’s collaborated with artists like Jack White, Half Moon Run, and July Talk, and even dipped into outlaw country with members of Eagles of Death Metal under the Midnight Cowgirls moniker. However, Danger to Dream marks a turning point for her as an independent artist, self-produced alongside long-time collaborator Jeff Mitchell.

The album opens with “Intro,” a track featuring spoken word and electronic beats that sets a contemplative mood for what follows. “Never Gonna Love You” pairs a Western-meets-Motown vibe with Mitchell’s gritty vocals, adding texture to Kandle’s layered sound. Throughout the album, she navigates a mix of trip-hop, rock, and soul, all while reflecting on themes like existential dread and personal struggles. Tracks like “Wallpaper” and “St. Paul’s” offer glimpses of jazz and industrial influences, showing Kandle’s range and adaptability.

While Danger to Dream is distinctly Kandle, the record also features contributions from drummer Yato Noukoussi and vocalists Debra-Jean Creelman and Kendel Carson, among others. Still, it’s Kandle’s poetic approach and sultry voice that drive the album, infusing each song with raw emotion and introspective depth. Ending on a hopeful yet vulnerable note, the album’s title track underscores her journey back to her roots—a dark yet inviting blend of rock and trip-hop that feels both timeless and fresh.
