Confined To Oblivion drop metal cover of Les Cowboys Fringants

In a bold fusion of genres, Montreal-based metal band Confined To Oblivion has ventured into new territory with their latest release, a cover of “Les Étoiles Filantes” by Les Cowboys Fringants. This move marks a significant departure from their established style, characterized by elements of melodic death and extreme metal. Since their inception in early 2015, Confined To Oblivion has been known for their original material, including two EPs and a full-length album, all of which have garnered positive reception. However, their latest endeavour is a nod to Quebec’s rich cultural tapestry, particularly paying tribute to Karl Tremblay, a pivotal figure in 21st-century Quebec music.

The band’s reinterpretation of “Les Étoiles Filantes” is a reimagining that blends the song’s original melodic charm with the intense energy of metal. The band’s statement reveals their intent to maintain the singalong quality of the original while infusing it with dynamic, metal-inspired vigour. This blend aims to appeal to a wide array of listeners, offering a fresh take on a beloved Quebecois classic.

The genesis of this cover is somewhat unorthodox for Confined To Oblivion. While guitarists Yannick Fortin and Simon Chenard typically spearhead the band’s creative process, this project was driven by bassist Antony Lepage’s deep connection with “Les Étoiles Filantes.” Motivated by the passing of Karl Tremblay, Lepage swiftly adapted and recorded this version, highlighting the song’s themes of life’s fleeting nature and the importance of embracing every moment.

In addition to the audio, Confined To Oblivion has also paid homage through their single’s artwork. Instead of a traditional illustration, they opted for a more realistic approach. Vocalist Jean-Charles Carrère, leveraging his photography skills, purchased a fish from Montreal’s Jean-Talon Market to recreate the iconic image associated with the original song. This choice reflects the band’s dedication to respecting and celebrating the song’s legacy while adding their unique touch.
