Montreal-based alt-pop artist BOBBI, known offstage as Kaylee Johnston, is set to release her latest single, “Bruised,” on February 22, ahead of her forthcoming EP, “Harsh,” scheduled for May. The single marks a significant evolution in BOBBI’s artistic journey, delving into themes of personal responsibility and the impact of surrounding oneself with challenging personalities.
In an industry often rife with surface-level narratives, “Bruised” stands out for its introspective examination of the self and the external forces that shape our lives. The song reflects BOBBI’s own experiences with negative patterns and the realization of her role in perpetuating them. This theme of introspection and self-awareness is a departure from the more conventional topics typically explored in pop music.
The collaboration with experimental-electronic artist Model 86 brings an added layer of depth to the track, both lyrically and sonically. The production intertwines elements of alt-pop and electronic music, creating a soundscape that mirrors the song’s introspective nature. This musical blend signifies a new direction for BOBBI, whose previous work, including her debut single “Calling Out,” leaned more towards traditional pop structures.
The accompanying music video, directed by Adem Boutlidja of LCDG Studio and post-produced by Thomas Ricquier, was filmed in an abandoned cathedral in Montreal. The use of CGI and visual effects in the video complements the song’s theme of gradual deterioration and eventual overcoming. BOBBI’s role as the creative director of the video further underscores her commitment to the authenticity of her artistic vision.
BOBBI’s EP “Harsh” is anticipated to continue exploring themes of personal growth and authenticity. This narrative is a shift from the artist’s earlier work, which found commercial success through placements on shows like the UK’s “Hollyoaks” and Netflix’s “Tiny Pretty Things.” The EP is expected to offer a deeper glimpse into BOBBI’s personal journey and her confrontation with the complexities of life, marking a significant chapter in her career as an artist committed to sincerity and depth in her work.
