Norah Jones set to release ninth studio album Visions on March 8

Singer-songwriter and pianist Norah Jones is poised to enrich the music landscape with her ninth solo studio album, Visions, scheduled for release on March 8 via Blue Note Records. This latest endeavour marks a collaborative effort with producer and multi-instrumentalist Leon Michels, a notable figure known for his work with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, and Lee Fields & The Expressions.

The announcement of Visions was accompanied by the release of its lead single, “Running,” a joint composition by Jones and Michels. The single, now available through an official video, showcases Jones’ versatile musicality as she takes on vocals, piano, guitar, and bass, while Michels contributes his skills on drums and baritone saxophone.

In addition to the album, Jones has also revealed her Spring 2024 North American tour, set to commence on May 6 in Boston at the MGM at Fenway. The tour includes notable stops at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC on May 13, the Paramount Theatre in Brooklyn on May 16-17, and the Apollo Theatre in Manhattan on May 19. No Montreal date has been announced. Tickets for these events are already on sale, with details on her official website.

Visions emerges as a vibrant, 12-song collection that speaks to themes of freedom, joy, resilience, and acceptance. It serves as a contrast to Jones’ previous album, Pick Me Up Off The Floor, released in 2020 amidst the global pandemic and reflecting the emotional turmoil of that period.

Jones comments on the inspiration behind Visions, stating that many of the album’s ideas occurred in moments of near-sleep or during the night. She emphasizes the album’s raw and soulful quality, born from the unfiltered jam sessions between herself and Michels.

Further enriching the album’s texture are contributions from trumpeter Dave Guy, bassist Jesse Murphy, and drummers Brian Blade and Homer Steinweiss. These musicians bring a distinct depth to the album, melding their unique talents with the foundational collaboration between Jones and Michels.

Michels, whose career spans various notable collaborations, brings a rich history of musical experience to Visions. His previous work includes performances with Dan Auerbach’s band, The Arcs, and his own project, El Michels Affair. The synergy between Michels and Jones had previously been showcased in their collaboration on the single “Can You Believe” and the 2021 holiday album I Dream of Christmas.

Visions represents a significant addition to Norah Jones’ extensive discography, promising to deliver a blend of her signature soothing vocals and introspective songwriting, complemented by Michels’ eclectic instrumental flair. The album is poised to offer listeners a diverse musical experience reflective of both artists’ rich artistic backgrounds and innovative approaches to music creation.
