Psychedelic Porn Crumpets + Acid Dad @ Bar Le Ritz

After approaching the end of yet another sold-out tour, Australian “Psychedelic-Rock” legends Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are back in Canada once again. This almost didn’t end up happening, as the band faced border crossing issues, leading to a 2-week postponement. However, nothing was stopping Psychedelic Porn Crumpets from delivering the show of a lifetime to their loyal and patient fanbase.

Accompanied by Brooklyn natives and close friends Acid Dad, this was surely a stacked lineup that was a must-see for fans of all kinds of “Psychedelic Rock.”

Acid Dad opened by setting the energy for the night. First on the setlist was “Searchin’”, a song which was inspired by Phil Lesh’s book “Searching for the Sound: My Life in The Grateful Dead.” Lead singer and guitarist Vaughn Hunt delivered soft-melancholic vocals. Followed by a soothing “90’s Alternative-Rock” and “Dream-Pop” guitar riff that would only make The Grateful Dead and Mac Demarco proud.

Psychedelic visuals were projected on walls around me, which created a flowing 3D, entrancing, and especially personal experience for each audience member. The energy the crowd created was easily felt.

After a stellar 10-song setlist, it was easy to forget Acid Dad was simply just the opener. Although their most popular song, “Brain Body,” wasn’t performed this time, it’s easy to say Acid Dad definitely knows how to keep an audience entertained. I’ve personally been following them for years, and it was a real treat to witness their unique magic in person, finally.

Next up, the one and only Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

After a brief intermission which seemed more of a universal smoke break, the atmosphere outside was immaculate. Amongst the clusters of laughs and friendly conversation, It seemed as if everyone were already friends with each other. Almost like a long-lost family reunion. The happiness in the air was contagious, and I couldn’t help but simply feel comfortable.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets kicked off their set with “Tally-Ho.” The perfect blend of upbeat grunge, psychedelia, and punk set the anticipation of what lay ahead for the night. “Tally-Ho” is an infectious tune with a catchy chorus that had fans quickly singing along and starting a mosh pit instantly. This was nothing short of the best way to begin a memorable set.

Fellow guitarist and vocalist Luke Parish had the crowd wrapped around his fingers when “Mundungus” came on. Joining lead singer Jack McEwan on vocals, it’s clear the two go hand in hand when it comes to producing the unique sound that Psychedelic Porn Crumpets creates.

Their setlist consisted of fav favourites such as “Found God In a Tomato,” “Hymn for a Droid,” and closed with “Cubensis Lenses.” An encore was followed with “Cornflake.”

Combining “Grunge” and “Punk” without the two similar but distinct genres drowning in each other is not a simple task. However, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets made it look far too easy. Drummer Danny Caddy carried the classic beloved “Psychedelic-Rock” rhythm. Lead vocalist and guitarist brought “90’s Grunge” and “Acid-Rock” energy into his vocals and riffs. At the same time, fellow vocalist and guitarist Luke Parish brought the “Punk” energy that was needed to the table. It takes a unique team of bandmates to pull this off, and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets do this perfectly.
