Polaris Music Prize-winner BACKXWASH will release her new album, HIS HAPPINESS SHALL COME FIRST EVEN THOUGH WE ARE SUFFERING, on October 31.

HIS HAPPINESS SHALL COME FIRST EVEN THOUGH WE ARE SUFFERING is the final LP in a trilogy of albums that include a culmination of themes around the intersection between faith, identity, ancestral trauma, and queerness. The poetry of her lyrics is the beginning of a cathartic healing process in which she is granting herself permission to be angry.
The first album in the trilogy, God Has Nothing To Do With This, Leave Him Out Of It (2020), was a reflection of her present experiences (at that time), while I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES (2021) was a glimpse into her adolescent and early adulthood years. HIS HAPPINESS SHALL COME FIRST EVEN THOUGH WE ARE SUFFERING (2022) is a deeper dive into the environmental influences that led to who she is today, from youth and times pre-dating her existence.
