Les Shirley “More Is More” interview

Les Shirley is an all-female rock power trio formed in Montreal in late 2018. Raphaëlle Chouinard (vocals, guitar), Lisandre Bourdages (drums) and Sarah Dion (bass) were brought together by a strong desire to make the music they’d always wanted to hear as their life’s playlist, fueled by their unique friendship.

Their musical style is redefining the genre connecting the dots between 90’s grunge, 2000’s punk rock culture and catchy pop tunes with influences ranging from HAIM to Céline Dion. It’s just the right dose of nostalgia mixed with a breath of fresh air, something that definitely stands out. The girls are solid musicians with a flair for flaming hot melodies and bursting riffs.

During the end of 2021, joining forces with Montreal’s indie queen, Marie-Pier Arthur, Les Shirley started working on their second full-length record, More Is More, set to be released on October 28.

With this second opus, the band digs deeper into their grunge roots and punk rock teenage dirtbags’ years. Singing about love, heartbreaks, anxiety and addictions, Raphaëlle Chouinard (the singer and band’s lyricist) is almost reading you pages of her personal journal. It’s a more introspective vibe than on Forever is Now, the band’s acclaimed first album. Written over the course of a pandemic lockdown with its ups and downs, More is More takes you track by track through the soundtrack of an inner crisis. It expresses changes and growth that are sometimes painful but necessary.

Les Shirley play Fairmount Theatre in Montreal on November 24. GET TICKETS HERE

We caught up with Raphaëlle to chat about the album, touring Europe and what might be in their DJ set at the album launch event.
