Mayfly is a Montreal-based duo composed of singer-songwriters Charlie and Emma. The girls are self-produced and are at the head of all the project’s artistic, visual and creative aspects. They are proud to push their art forward as two young women in the music industry trying to inspire other women like them to own their place. The essence of Mayfly is to create a safe space for all listeners to escape from their reality through the duo’s musical and visual universe.
Charlie and Emma met in 2017 and found a mutual love for arts and music.
“We just sort of ended up being in the same program and it clicked immediately. We were studying creative arts so it was the mix of music, cinema, journalism, photography. And we just really vibed. in one of the music classes we had to basically just come up with any project and we decided to team up and we started doing covers on YouTube. So that’s how kind of it started. That’s how we first sang together. And then, By the end of college, we have to do a project that you include lots of your classes in it. And then we decided to take this cover band that we created and then just make it evolve into an actual band. And our project for the end of our college was to write three original songs and then put them out online on streaming platforms. And then just decided to move up to Montreal and just like, give it a go.”
Since the release of their soft indie-pop debut EP “ESSENCE,” which featured a more vulnerable and innocent side to the duo, they are now ironing out a more mature and darker sound for their first full-length album “HIDEAWAY” which presents an electro-pop sound. It will be released under the Montreal label Duprince Records in 2022.
“What is funny is that some of the songs that are on the next record were actually wrote before some of the songs that we put on the EP so at first when we worked on the EP, we decided, even though we had some much more darker songs, songs that we started to write, we wanted to first go with something that was really like vulnerable and really true to ourselves. Something really innocent sort of to start with and something really simple also so that people can connect easily with us. So then after that, we could move to a bigger project that was a bit more dark, because we felt like it would have been a bit weird to start really dark and then come back with something really like sweet and innocent. But I think we went with the flow at that time. We were really in the vibe of writing this super innocent-sounding EP, a bit lighter, although it is quite dark in the sense that lyrically, it’s very dark talking about again, you know, dark states of mental health. But we decided to bring it in, in a simpler way. It’s something that people, when they listen, they don’t even notice that it’s talking about something dark cause it’s so like innocent. So we wanted to kind of go back to the essence of our duo, which is like guitar, piano, voice to then bring people into our world for what it is. And then when we decided to start the next chapter with the album, we were like, okay, let’s have a bit more fun, let’s dig deeper, let’s do something a bit more complex and let’s show the darkness this time because it is really present both in our musical styles, but in our personal lives. So I think it was a conscious choice, but it was also the natural flow of our creation.”
Mayfly have completed their debut album and are excited for its release later this year.
“Compared to the EP, this album is more like, how would we let go of all this darkness and this negativity? It’s like how to cope with it on one hand, but then also how to get rid of it and just being in this era and this mood of letting go. So I feel like that’s the main theme of the album is like, okay, we’ve lived the darkness now, but how do we get out of it? And it’s okay also to not feel okay, but it’s okay to have a moment that you want to escape it just for a moment, to like breathe, even if like your problems are not solved, but you can have a moment of just letting go of things for a moment.”
