Women in Music & Entertainment: Building a Powerful Network

“In this industry, every woman’s success opens doors for the next. I want to create a space where we grow side by side, learn from each other and collaborate to become stronger.” — Anastasiya Struk

On August 28 I attended the first Women in Music & Entertainment Series event, which was hosted by Struk Productions and the Belmont. This project is a dream come true for Anastasiya Struk, who, in a few short years after immigrating from Ukraine as a refugee, has managed to build a network of some awe-inspiring artists and industry leaders. Created to celebrate and uplift women and gender-diverse professionals in the arts and media, both on stage and behind the scenes, it was designed to connect and inspire each other.

I had arrived early, got a table, and waited. I didn’t recognize anyone but noticed many women, like me, were alone, so my mom energy kicked in and soon my table was full.

It began with a fantastic panel discussion with some incredible women:

  • Ranee Lee – Juno Award-winning vocalist, musician, actor, author, educator, Order of Canada member
  • Genevieve Lussier – Producer, Production Cirque du Soleil, C2 International, Multicolore
  • Kyria Kilakos – Co-founder Indica Records and MTL Women in Music, A&R Managing Director
  • Ximena Holuigue – A&R, Business Manager, Founder ISLAS
  • Hanorah – Singer/songwriter, musician, actress, painter, writer

Moderated by Hanorah, who had prepared some deeply insightful and thought-provoking questions. With themes centring around owning your accomplishments, taking up space, not waiting for permission, and staying inspired.

One of my favourite moments was hearing Montreal’s Queen of Jazz, Ranee Lee, telling us to trust ourselves because music and art will always be there.

The discussion was then followed by a fun DJ set by Chris.tina, where we were given a chance to network. She brought a warm and friendly vibe, playing some old-school funk and disco.

And then we were treated to some great performances by four talented artists: Mel Pacifico, Avery Jane, Monna, and Kelowna Rose.

“I want it to be a whole ecosystem for women, where it will go way further than just one showcase or one meeting. I want to have educational workshops and mentorships. I really want to create a whole network between women who already made it in the industry with the women who are just starting. I always approach my events with the idea that they will be even better than I imagined, but it actually was even better than I imagined.” — Anastasiya Struk
