We Are Wolves Bid Farewell with Final Album NADA

Montreal’s indie rock duo, We Are Wolves, dropped what they’re calling their final album, NADA, today. Comprised of long-time collaborators Alexander Ortiz and Vincent Levesque, the band is closing a chapter with this sixth release, their first full-length project since 2019. Known for defying genre boundaries, We Are Wolves have consistently walked a path distinct from Montreal’s well-worn indie trails. In NADA, they weave together an eclectic mix of synth rock, cold wave, post-punk, and garage rock.

The duo describes NADA as “a decades- and continents-spanning mixtape,” reflecting themes of confusion and alienation tempered by refined pop craftsmanship. The track “Seul au cinéma” stands out as a focus of the album, giving listeners a taste of the dark, layered, and heavily synthesized sound that’s become a signature of the band’s style.

Notably, NADA includes collaborations with some of the underground’s finest. Oliver Ackermann, frontman of noise-rock band A Place to Bury Strangers, lent his talents to “Seul au cinéma,” recorded during an impromptu session at Death By Audio in New York. The band recalls that Ackermann’s approach added a “slightly dark yet romantic” quality to the track, which embodies a gritty, lo-fi aesthetic that’s as haunting as it is immersive.

Reflecting on their decision to call it quits, Ortiz and Levesque suggest this is less an end than a transformation. In a statement accompanying the album’s release, the band hints at their music as a response to a chaotic world, capturing a sense of alienation while embracing it as an artistic fuel. “We’re building a bunker,” they say, leaning into the apocalyptic undertones that have long defined their work. It’s a statement less about survival than an invitation to embrace the chaos—inside the bunker, so to speak.

NADA, produced by the band themselves, was recorded across various locations, including sessions in Mexico with producer Odin Parada and mixing in Montreal by Adrian Popovich (known for work with SUUNS and DFA1979). Released on Montreal’s Simone Records, the album marks the end of an era for the duo, closing out over two decades of music that pushed boundaries, defied expectations, and left a distinct mark on Montreal’s music scene.

NADA is available now through Simone Records.
