Quebec pianist and composer Viviane Audet is preparing to tour Le piano et le torrent, a performance built around her recent instrumental album of the same name. The project, released in 2024, has drawn consistent praise from critics for its restrained yet evocative approach.
Audet, who grew up in the village of Maria in Gaspésie, describes the album as a reflection on memory, loss, and her ties to the region where she was raised. The compositions, largely for solo piano, lean toward minimalism, with recurring motifs that mirror the ebb and flow of maritime landscapes. A companion book of sheet music, already into a second printing, was published earlier this year and is available at Archambault stores across Quebec.
For the live presentation, Audet will be joined by harpist Éveline Grégoire Rousseau, known for her work with The Barr Brothers, Elisapie, and Cordâme. Together, the duo aim to present the music in a format that blends performance with storytelling, weaving personal narrative through instrumental arrangements.
Audet is no stranger to the Quebec cultural scene. Alongside her solo work, she is a member of the folk group Mentana and co-hosts Piano Public on Télé-Québec. She has composed extensively for film and television, including scores for Camion (2012), Les rois Mongols (2017), and Arsenault et fils (2022). Her recent soundtrack credits also include the documentary Polytechnique: ce qu’il reste du 6 décembre. In 2023, she released her third album of songs, Les nuits avancent comme des camions blindés sur les filles, which earned multiple award nominations.
