Twenty One Pilots @ Bell Centre

Twenty One Pilots

What’s the best way to end your work week?  Having a beer with friends, maybe a night in with the family or a take in a concert? All the above are correct cause it’s your night and you can do with it what you want!  If, by chance, you are one of those concertgoers and you had the privilege of having tickets to see Twenty One Pilots during the ICY Tour, well, you were in for a delicious treat.  The Bell Centre in Montreal was the place to be on this particular Friday night.

The place was buzzing with anticipation after Peter McPoland’s set.  Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, I missed the set; speaking with fans in the front row, they confirmed to me that his set was perfect to set the pace for what was to come.  Check out his song Tonight,  it’s a fun alternative song that makes you want to dance. I can only imagine how fun it would be live, I won’t miss his next show and neither should you.

Off went the lights, and it was time for the duo from Columbus, Ohio to hit the stage.  We are first presented with a video of the two heroes (Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun) walking in the snow until they encounter a blue door, to which the fans yell, “Open the door.”

Finally, they open the door that turns out to be a portal to the stage.  As the door swings open, the duo rise from it to a snowy stage with fans screaming their heads off. They kicked off with the appropriate Good Day.  The fun continued from there with a solid set featuring 27 songs from every one of their albums during the 2-hour show.

Needless to say, this was the best show I have seen from them, this being my 3rd show.  The amount of growth this band has had since I saw them on the BLURRYFACE world tour at MTelus in 2016 is crazy.  They have always been an energetic duo; however, now they are a well-oiled machine backed by a solid band and team.  From the video screens to Tyler running around the arena, to ukuleles and crowd surfing, this show had it all, while Josh kept the pacing with his masterful drumming.  It was one of my favourite shows this year, and I’ve seen a ton of great acts; a must-see for any fan of the band. Everything was perfect; I was particularly impressed with their very energetic bassist and the sound quality of the show.  So many cool moments; let me highlight three of them.

While performing Mulberry Street, Tyler went to the B stage and performed on the piano installed there. He gave the crowd some instructions on when to show their phone lights, which created a super cool moment. Second one was when he jumped off that B stage onto a huge mattress and surfed his way back to the main stage. Sool fun, and finally, he went into the crowd and up the aisle into the red sections to perform close to those in the lucky sections. Ending the show on a high note, the band performed their massive hit Stressed Out and followed up with two more songs, Heathens and Trees.

Forever impressed by what this duo has accomplished, and I can’t wait for what’s next!  Go check out the ICY tour if it comes near you!
