For the last few years, I’ve made a conscious effort to see artists that are local, fairly unknown, or underrepresented, especially females in the hard rock scene. So far, I have not been disappointed and discovered some great new music.
I only knew a few songs from The Warning and hadn’t realized that not only have they been around for 10 years, but they’ve released three studio albums. I wondered how this was possible as they are so young (their ages range from 18 to 23) and then I went down the YouTube rabbit hole. They were the three sisters from Mexico who went viral in 2014 covering Metallica’s Sandman. (almost 25,000,000 views.) I had also seen them on the Ellen Show, and remember how they boldly declared that they were going to pursue their goals of being rock musicians.

Well, almost 10 years later, I got to watch them live their dreams up close at Le Studio TD on (Saturday August 12) I arrived at the venue around 7:15 and was lucky enough to catch most of the supporting band. Toronto-based Mute Choir, who describe themselves as “existential crisis, funk” won us over in a short but sweet set. And were genuinely appreciative of the warm response of the sold-out venue.

I believe that this was the most packed that I had ever seen LeStudio TD. It was hot, cramped and muggy, and there was no pit for photographers, so I had to shove my way to the stage through a mixed bag of frenzied fans. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but there were an alarming amount of large, muscular, tattoo-covered dudes with shaven heads. I did spot a few adorable young girls, accompanied by their parents, and a very large and passionate Latino community.

Around 8 pm, the sisters charged the stage like an electrical storm, with their megawatt mischievous grins. Alejandra began with that menacing bass line, followed simultaneously by Paulina’s vigorous drumming and Daniella’s crazy riff intro to “ Disciple.” (From their latest album Error released June 2022) The crowd went wild, thrusting their fists in the air, jumping up and down, and singing every single word, along with the band.
The girls were bringing it and they were bringing it hard, and to be honest, they didn’t even have to. They have more than proven themselves and everyone there was genuinely excited to see them. The Warning has everything it takes to make a great rock band. They have attitude, personality, energy, and mad skills, and if that’s not enough, they are gorgeous.

In addition to mastering the bass, I have never seen a more spectacular hair flip than Alejandra’s. I have never seen a drummer smile so radiantly while pounding the crap out of their instruments. And Daniela’s attempt at speaking French was definitely a humorous highlight. I don’t know if she did it on purpose, but when she said, “Nous sommes très jolies d’être à Montréal” we all burst into laughter.
The band kept amping up the sweat-drenched room with fan favourites (mine were More and Money) building up the excitement with their high-octane energy.

Then the lights dimmed, Daniela switched guitars for her white Gibson, and played the intro to Enter Sandman. It was a total rock goddess moment, and everyone in the room knew it. The magical fusion of her raspy, voice and ridiculous finger work, with her sisters’ stunning harmonies took the song to a whole new place. When Alejandra sang “Hush little baby, don’t say a word,” I got goosebumps and I’m not even a big Metallica fan.
“My sisters and I have a telepathic connection – we can just look at each other and we instantly know what each of us is going to do,” Daniela
My favourite performance of the night had to be Narcisista. Without missing a beat or losing her breath, Paulina sang while drumming her heart out with an intensity that was so infectious I wish I could speak Spanish. And best of all, the audience weren’t the only ones having a blast. The girls looked like they were living their best lives. And they definitely worked hard to deserve it all.
