Montreal’s darkwave scene has another reason to glow dimly in the night. The City Gates, one of the city’s most respected post-punk and shoegaze bands, have released their haunting new single, “La Douleur (Des Mortels).”

Known for blending moody guitars, cinematic soundscapes, and emotional depth, The City Gates have been carving out their place in the alternative underground for years. Their sound recalls legends like The Jesus and Mary Chain and Cocteau Twins, but their voice is distinctly their own. Their lyrics often explore faith, fragility, and the tension between light and shadow.
The new single dives deeper into those themes. Sung in French, “La Douleur (Des Mortels)” is a mesmerizing journey through sorrow, beauty, and transcendence. It moves with the pulse of post-punk and the lush haze of shoegaze, capturing that bittersweet edge where darkness and emotion meet.
The track was mixed and mastered by William Faith (Faith and the Muse, Christian Death, Mephisto Walz) at 13 Studio in Chicago. His production brings a sharp emotional clarity to the band’s swirling guitars and ethereal tones, giving the song both atmosphere and weight.
“La Douleur (Des Mortels)” feels like a reflection on what it means to be human — fragile, searching, and caught between faith and despair. It’s another reminder that The City Gates are not just keeping post-punk alive in Montreal, they’re shaping what comes next.
