Steeple Stands Tall In The Montreal Music Scene

Sydney Bishop scours thrift shops looking for treasures, whether vintage clothing or jewelry. She does the same when it comes to listening to music, searching in the far corners of the musicsphere for obscure musical treasures.

Sydney Bishop signing on stage

The eclectic tastes of the band blends into a sound that can best be described as: Mathgaze Jazz. Imagine a jazz band who writes Radiohead songs, with a sprinkle of Math Rock and Shoegaze.

Sydney Bishop (vocals), Mathias Javgureanu (guitar), Adam Maiorano (bass) & Evan Hardy (drums) took the stage at Toscadura with a crowd larger than the headliner to follow. Despite Sydney being sick, and relying on NyQuil to make it through, the band stood out, playing a tight and entertaining set.

The night started smoothly with Leave No Trace and progressively escalated the energy, playing songs off the Fishbowl Heaven EP, along with some unreleased tracks.

With a strong rhythm section of drums and bass building the foundation of the songs, the complex Math Rock guitars danced atop, while emotional lyrics were released.

Highlights were Don’t Come Over and Michael Cera.

The set ended with In the Sun where Sydney unleashes the words directly to a fan in the front row: “I promise you that I will change. I cannot change.”

Steeple is original, digging in the archaeological musical treasures of the past, and reshaping them into an emotionally charged, and complex sound. They are a band, now firmly on my radar, where I look forward to seeing their journey as they rise to the top of the steeple of the Montreal scene and beyond.
