French-Korean songwriter Claire Chicha has been building something special since her 2020 breakthrough ‘Decompose,’ and ANGIE represents her most ambitious work yet. The album’s 12 tracks blur genre lines with serious skill, from the glitchy opener ‘PINK LEMONADE’ to the hyperpop experiments of ‘De Guerre.’
The standout track ‘Athlete’ perfectly captures what makes Chicha’s approach so compelling. It’s this dreamy, lo-fi gem about backseat adventures and late-night fantasies, built on whisper-soft vocals and intricate production layers. The kind of song that sounds even better on vinyl, which our winner will definitely appreciate.
Chicha’s musical DNA runs deep. Raised by a French Algerian composer father and Korean pianist mother, she absorbed jazz and classical influences before developing her sound across LA, Thailand, and Paris. That multicultural foundation shows up in everything she does, creating music that feels both intimate and universal.
BBC Radio 1 has given her four ‘Hottest Record’ spins, and her recent tours opening for Sabrina Carpenter and Wallows proved she can own any stage. Friday’s POP Montreal performance should be explosive.
